I have been using Duet Display to connect my iPad Air to an 11-inch MacBook Air. To be fair, the lags were only in the beginning of the video and they disappeared after a short time.
In testing this is largely true, although lags were sometimes seen while playing YouTube video on the iPad.
The Duet Display people claim that the wired connection makes the operation of the iPad lag-free.
